Recently, a change happened to my laptop so that when I close the screen and subsequently open it to continue work, the screen remains blacked out. I have tried several things like the function keys, CTRL-ALT-DEL, etc. to get the display to return, but to no avail. So far, the only thing that works is to hard cycle the power button which seems like a bad idea.

Any one have any experience with this type of behavior with their laptop?

Maybe you should provide some more info about which distro (and version) you're using, your laptop model, and perhaps the graphics chipset too. For the latter, have a look at the output of

Code:
/sbin/lspci -nnk

I should have done that already. I am definitely not the PC savy person - I'm just starting to try to learn and just installed Linux from the LXF learners disk last month.

I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 with a Gnome Shell. The PC is a Sony Vaio PCG-8112L with VESA: G86 Board - e415h01.
