Streaming from XP PC to Ubuntu PC via hub

Have emachine running XP wireless linked to hub
BT Home Hub 2
Dell PC running Ubuntu 11.10 cabled to hub

How can we connect these two to each other?

Well they are probably both on the same network (unless you have hacked your home hub), and you don't need to worry about networky stuff (dhcp, etc) as the home hub will do this for you.

What stuff do you want to share between the two? If just file etc you can install samba on the ubuntu box and 'share' the folders on the XP box. Many tutorials on the web for each

As we are unable to stream iPlayer because slow broadband, we can Download to the XP PC (which has iPlayer Desktop installed upstairs) them stream to the Ubuntu PC (Downstairs).

Both on the same Hub XP PC is wireless and Ubuntu PC is wired.

Try vlc for media/videos/music. RTPD seems about the easiest.
