Debian, installing wi-fi drivers

Postby GeordieJedi » Fri Apr 06, 2012 7:19 pm

Hi all.

OK, (In an attempt to become Dutch Master's new best friend, I've installed Debian 6)...... :D

I have a few questions (unsurprisingly).

1. Debian 6 doesn't have drivers for either of my USB Wi-Fi sticks.

1. WUSB 54GC - (Black USB stick - Linksys - version 3) =
Linksys WUSB54GC v3 802.11g Adapter [Ralink RT2870]

or my older stick =

2. WUSB 54GC - (Silver USB stick - Linksys - Version 1) =
Linksys WUSB54GC v1 802.11g Adapter [Ralink RT73]

So, can I download them (as a .deb file) from somewhere else online
and install them manually?
(either from my Win partition, or my laptop ?)

2. I like new software (like Firefox 10 and Libre Office 3.5 and the like)
Is it easy to add new more up-to-date respositories to the std Debian
install. Without having to compile my own software?

(I'm a bit of a pragmatist, and I'm quite happy using the non-free drivers
and codecs to make my life easier).

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Can't answer your first question (I'm not that familiar with Debian), though I would exepct that you would need firmware for the USB Wifi adaptors - not sure hwo easy that is to get for Debian.

As to the second on, for Mozilla products, there is an alternative. Even though it is intended for Ubuntu, I've been using it with SalineOS (which is based on Debian stable) for a while. Have a look here: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/u ... =Main_Page

The packages from ubuntuzilla are not compiled for Ubuntu, they're the Mozilla-released binaries built into .deb packages.

Paul.
