I'm seeking help to obtain a screen saver that will function as a banner - that I can insert text into that will drifting cross. I'm running Linux Mint 9 as a test bed.

The motivation for this is to exposed golf club members to Linux open sourced software as the OS driving of the golflink score system and speed up the delivery of golfers handicaps on site prior to games.

The current system is operating on an old PC with Windows 7 and is that slow - it's frustrating to everyone who uses it. - This is a golden opportunity to get Linux into the breach to show what it can do and how much faster than Windows it is.

KDE's screensaver has a banner option and I'm fairly sure xscreensaver can do this too.

GLText may do what you want, by default it spins the text but spin can be switched off.

man gltext

Thanks Rams & netz, I'll give it my best shot in sorting out the details to get my requirements up and running.

You might be interested in a program called ticker, this will scroll the output of a command across the bottom or top of a screen, and you can apparently use VTsplit to use the rest of the screen for something else.
Or you could use OOo Impress to scroll text over a background image.
Or there are various digital signage systems out there, depends how complex you want it to be.
