We find the AMD64s work a lot better than 32bit Athlons as MySQL servers and other high CPU usage tasks, have just installed 4 of them and will probably have several more over the coming months.

With your intended use, I would have selected the cheaper processor and spent the money I saved on buying more RAM, as that's likely to be of more use handling large files and using gimp (think of the memory used by all the saved undo levels). Still, your choice looks like a reasonable compromise

I just found the answer in this article:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=219&num=1

It compares the AMD Venice and the AMD San Diego processors.

I chose the:
Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939

If you have 2 choices for a processor, ie.
1. AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 1GHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939
2. AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939

Does that mean the 4000 is 33 percent faster than the 3000 ?

Does that mean the 4000 will run equally hotter.

I am trying to decide the real world gains between processors in the AMD Athlon 64... I can afford the more expensive one but do not know if it's really necessary (2D Graphics Workstation, Gimp, 100meg files)

Thank you.
