Well so far I tried 2 apps earlier this evening (before I went to the pub) and neither work with the ./Configure make... trio. Probably just me, but to be honest I have yet to look into the error messages properly, I rushed it on the way to the pub, you know, there is an order of importance to some things, and when you not been to the pub for a month somehow it takes over the majority of important things... or at least in my life it does....lol

And yes if any of this makes no sense, then you can blame copious amounts of Timothy Taylors Landlord bitter, always interferes with my coordination.. damn stuff

You don't have to stick with the PBIs though - you can use the good ol' BSD ports system and compile from source. Once you have the tree, search for packages by running 'find /usr/local/src -name <package>' or wherever the ports are installed to; then the './configure, make and make install' trio and you should be done
It probably is normal, as far as the concept can go with out a dedicated thread to discuss all of the possible variant implications. Generally dangerous teritory to get into though. Especially if any of my relatives are involved in the conversation.
Does anyone else use it regularly, or have anything good or bad to say about it?
>>

Iv'e had FreeBSD in at one time, and have been meaning to do it again for quite a while. I found the 'man' pages far more explanitory than those in Linux. And the way the developers said basically, their focus is to produce a secure mature operating system environment and don't particually care if people like it or not. So don't bother us with feed back along the lines of 'couldn't you make it a bit more like windows please'. Very refreshing
I also liked the way that they suggested that a secure system should never have installed any program thats designed to create other programs. Which covers all the compiles and imaging, audio creation sw. You wont find other distros actually mentioning that. Though, it does sound somewhat extreme, i can see their point.
No, because it's not even remotely convincing. You haven't misspelled anything, used incorrect punctuation, misused case, or in any other way attempted to render your post incomprehensible/presented evidence of a disorganised mind.
I am not all that fussed about the style of the installer, to be honest I couldn't care if it's textual or graphical as long as it works..

You are correct about the PBI's though, there is a shortage, especially as I'm used to the availability of Ubuntu's repositories. I think I maybe able to live with though.

Learning the console commands is fun, although finding a good guide to the available commands is almost impossible.. ie I have yet to find one..

Still I'm liking it which was an improvement over plan9 which I lost my rag with in like an hour, couldnt understand how to make it do anything of any use..

I think I may keep this on here for sometime..

PC-BSD is a nice system if you like Windows style installers. If it runs on your system then there is no reason not to use it. Last time I used it there was a shortage of PBIs though.

So no worries !

I noticed that, I had trouble find a package that wasn't available on both systems.
I did notice that mono hasn't found it's way into the pc-bsd software dir yet.

Quote:

The only reason I didn't keep it on my machine the last time I installed it was hardware problems.

I (thankfully) have had no hardware issues yet, unlike with Windows that refused to utilise my sound card without the driverdisk.. PC-BSD and Ubuntu, however, both had the sound working out of the box.

Also, this (BSD) is running a heck of a lot fast than than any of my *buntu's and stupidly quicker than my Sled10 install.. All on similar hardware.

I'm hoping that the experience remains this much pleasure.

[EDIT]: I also have yet to find a BSD forum that is as fun and informative as this one. Actually I have yet to find any forum that is as pleasant/fun/informative/stimulating (non-sexually of course) as this one.
