Yes, and as a welsh speaker, I can say it's very confusing to listed to, as you keep noticing words you recognise, but don't quite understand the sentence as a whole.

Welsh has evolved a lot since it and Breton were "compatible", due to the larger number of people who talked welsh over the centuries.

I thought maybe you'd meant that. And I seemed to have read a comma between "French" and "Basque", which I now see isn't there. Must have been the spots in front of my eyes from standing in the sun too long.

Except of course that Walsall is defined in my Dictionary of English Place-Names thus:

Walsall W. Mids. Waleshale 1163. 'Nook
of land or valley of a man called Walh'.
OE pers. name + halh. Alternatively
the first element could be OE walh
'Welshman'.

Not meaning to get into a language discussion really, I have read that Black country dialect is close to early english, using some of the same words and idioms.

The comment on Gaelic was that it is earlier in the UK, not an earlier form of english, just rambling ,sorry.

Welsh and Cornish are Gaelic languages (not dialects), less similar to English than Russian is. Irish is also a Gaelic language, although from a different branch of the Gaelic language tree.

Scots is, like English, descended from Anglo-Saxon, which is possibly what you meant. It is spoken in the Lowlands of Scotand, and has nothing to do with the Gaelic spoken in the Highlands, which is a dialect of Irish. I'm not sure what any of these have to do with the Black Country accent, which I find quite beautiful - unlike Brummy, which is just flat.

It is an accent that, to outsiders, sounds brummy, but to any local sounds completely different. Indeed, it is a different dialect, though the vowel sounds are somewhat similar.

I think I'd also be able to spot a lumpy northerner with a cod brummy accent as well. Besides you'd need to speak Black Country to merge in, in Walsall.
