I am encouraged by the comments made by ollie and started downloading
SuSE Linux 10.0 Evaluation version for 64 bit computers.

It is over 3GB. I must keep my computer on for about 48 hours to complete
the download. It is going on.

I will not shut down the computer until it completes the download. Ollie
suggested the Novell site.

Yes Ubuntu lacks gnome, one of the reasons I didnt like it I guess. Yes apt-get is a dwonlaoding program in effect. If you wnat aprogram then you can run from the command line

apt-get [program]

although you do have to do other things from time to time. Portage is very similar in that to install a program you type

emerge [program]

and it will downlaod and isntall the ebuild for you. Kubuntu is a better idea if you are certain that you want KDE, it may even be possible to put KDE onto an ordinary ubuntu install, I have absolutely no idea on that one. theoretically it is but it may take a bit of work. Another thing you could do for backup is use an exteranl hard drive and use a Cron job do backup to that, you could even get it to burn a CD for you, but you would have to remember to put a disc in the burner first.
The best way for backup I have found is simply to create a backup as soon as you edit/create anything. Its a bit of a pain at first but once you get into the routine its quite useful.
I have already asked them to ship Ubuntu. A friend of mine told me Kubuntu
is the best one. My friend said Ubuntu lacks KDE interface. It has the GNOME interface.

I have never used GNOME. Is it correct that Ubuntu lacks KDE?

I don't have an extra computer or a network at home. I will get an extra computer soon.

What is portage? I think Apt-get is a downloading tool. I am not sure.

I only used Ubuntu briefly myself, theres nothing wrong with it, I just happen to prefer portage to apt-get. In terms of the partitioning I have to admit I didnt realise you used a windows based program to get that output. Was quite obvious really I dont know why I didnt make the connection
In terms of your backup needs, if you have a home network, or even a spare PCthat you can network to your main one, you could do what I do. I have a cron Job running that every 2 nights backs up my home directory to a network share.
Mandrake 10.0 was indeed a pretty good distribution, when i originally started using Linux Mandrake is what i started on, although it was far earlier than version 10.0.
Whether Ubuntu will be good for you is dependant on how you like your systems to be, as I say I prefer portage to apt-get, so I preferred Gentoo, but then I do like to be in control so perhaps its the installation method that attracted me to Gentoo. The good thing about Ubuntu is that you get a live CD as well, so it means you cna put that in first and check you like it. Not knowing more about your needs I dont know which distro to recommend, although if you are interested in SUSE then the boxed version is worth buying. It may be that you can get a 64-bit version of SuSE OSS on the net, although I would guess its quite well hidden.

I will go to the Ubuntu website and try first. You said the list doesn't show anything as to the ext2 partition.
I have downloaded a Windows freeware program called Everest to check my system. The output is from that program.

You know Windows doesn't show those Linux partitons.

I know the installer is capable of partitoning.
The question is to get a working Linux system to my computer. Are you satisfied with Ubuntu?

I worked almost 2 years with Mandrake 10.0. It was an excellent product. The computer crashed and everything went to hell. I lost everything. Those loses can't buy for money.

I must learn to live this way. I haven't done back up work for a nearly a year. Because I don't have time. I go to school and train 3 times a week a at a gym. Those loses are enormous. As I said, I must learn to live with this.
The Eval version is the same as the boxed version except you don't get the 90-days of support or the printed manuals. The installation process uses qparted to re-size Windows partitions if required.

OK in terms of sending the CD, I didnt realise you were in Sweden but if you want it I can still send it, itll just take longer to get there. Alternatively you can go to Ubuntus website and order some cds for free. In terms of your hard drive problem, my recommendation is assuming you havent put anything in it, delete the ext2 partition from Partition magic, that list of output you gave us does not mention an ext2 partition. I have had nothing but problems with partition magic the odd times I have used it, you are far better off letting the installer make a partition for you.

Hope this helps
My Windows XP works fine. However, I am not a Windows fan. I work only with Linux. I just keep Windows as a symbol.

Ollie, the Novell site you mentioned doesn't have the full 64 bit version of SuSE Linux. Just an evaluation version.

What is the meaning of evaluation version? I don't think it has everything.

Please tell me.

I have the Partiton Magic program installed on Windows XP. I used that program to create and partition a 'ext2' file systm partiton on my computer.
Knoppix beautifully recognized that partition and installed it.

Afterwards, I tried to go to the Internet. It didn't work as I had to configure the system to recognize the NIC card. I tried many hours to
fix the problem. My NIC card is built on to the motherboard.

The Windows XP recognized my NIC card. That is why I can go the Internet. So nothing wrong with the NIC card.

I've read through this thread again and I wonder if all the debate about 32-bit versus 64-bit might be missing the real issue here. Gorky states that he has a 160 GB SATA drive with about half of that partitioned for Windows (presumably - he mentions NTFS). And presumably Windows is both residing on and recognising the hard drive. I presume also that the remaining 80GB or so is free space which the Linux installer really ought to recognise. Is the machine running Windows OK, Gorky? If it is then we can assume there is not a hardware problem. I have no experience with SATA drives, so can someone else say whether this could explain non-recognition by the Suse installer.

Another question, Gorky. Did Knoppix recognise the partitions on your hard disk? That could be useful information. I think you use qparted, but someone else might care to correct me. Sorry I can't be of more help, but my technical knowledge is limited. I just wanted to fan the flames of debate for you.

The SUSE Linux 10 version you are looking for is SUSE Linux 10 Downloads. The DVD version has both 32-bit and 64-bit installation files. The openSUSE 10 version would have come from openSUSE Release Version - Stable actually only comes in CD versions for x86, PPC or x86_64 - I'm assuming that LXF have used Jigdo to put a DVD version together from the x86 CDs. I can't confirm this I'm still waiting for my LXF 74 - I'm on subscription in Australia

Try downloading either the Novell SUSE Linux 10 DVD Eval version or the openSUSE 10 x86_64 CD version - or find a friend with broadband and see if they can download overnight for you. Or you could try our mate A-Wing at LinuxISO.co.uk who seems to have very good deals close to you.

I thank everybody for the replies.
Rhakios suggested downloading from the Bittorrent. I did it. It was some
9.2 version. That fellow has ripped it from the original DVD. It was some 7.5GB. It took almost 4 days to download. I don't have high speed downloading. My data official transfer rate is 0.5Mbit per second.

I can get 8Mbit per second. I can't afford it.

That fellow has made a mistake while ripping it, as far as I understand. It
doesn't work. A friend of mine told me it was a tricky thing to rip CDs.

I can buy the latest SuSE 10.0 package for 600.00 crowns in Sweden. It is a lot of money for me. Nowadays I am studying networking. I don't work.

In dollars it is between 70 to 80. I mean 600.00 crowns is
about 70-80 dollars.

I looked at the package. It clearly says the inclusion of 32bit and 64bit
version. I don't have to buy from the Amazon website. It is
available here in Sweden.

Buy the way, I bought another magazine which has Knoppix 4.0 version. It
is a live CD. It beautifully installed the program. I can use the word
processor, format diskettes, work in the shell, etc.

I can't go to the Internet. It doesn't recognize the network card. I tried many hours to fix the problem. This too is a 32 bit version, I guess.

Shiffy said he could give me the Ubuntu. Thank you very much. How can you do that? I live in Stockholm, Sweden.
