Mess up Linux file systems you mean?? I wouldn't trust Microshaft at all

That's a good point. If Windows 7 has its own partition editor, use that to shrink the Windows partition, then use GParted to rearrange your Linux partitions. I wouldn't trust a Microsoft program to mess with Linux filesystems.

In spite of nelz's last comment I would strongly suggest you shrink your Win7 partition with windows own disk management utility. I am aware that users are now apparently using gparted to do it successfully, but it is always safer to use windows own utilities where they exist, particularly for partition editing, which always carries a risk, no matter how small.

You have /home on the root partition and that has 16GB free, almost all of which is available for use in your home directory. The only way to get more is to reduce the size of your Windows partition and increase sda7. You need to boot from a live CD to do this and then use gparted to resize. There is a gparted live CD at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php/ but most distro live CDs also include it (I think it is called Partition Manager in the Ubuntu live menu).

Resizing filesystems is risky, especially on a desktop machine where a power failure can cause problems, so make a backup first.

I did partition the hard disk, did not use Wubi.

Is this a wubi install of ubuntu inside windows, or did you do a proper partitioned dual boot?

I have SATA hard disk, 500 Gb, dual booting with W7. The Home folder on Ubuntu is nearly filled up and does not allow VirtualBox in Ubuntu to install Windows XP.
