No, but I finally found a better solution: The drivers for Xerox Phaser 6000B seem to be compatible, at least they work perfectly right for me! Hope this helps others who try to find a solution

                                      Hi,

are there any news on this topic? I have bought an Epson C1700 printer too, which works flawlessly under Windows, but I cannot find a driver for linux that works. Tried with the Minolta magicolor 1600 driver, but the only thing it does is make the printer go to error state (the lower red LED is on).

Is there really no driver, or any compatible model I could try?

I don't want to get your hopes up, but I've dug up an Ubuntu thread, which suggests that the Konica Minilta Magicolor 1600w driver may be okay to use:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1751308

Ref posts #7, #8

It will depend on the Ubuntu version you're using though. Strangely I can't see any references to such a driver on CUPS or gutenprint websites, so good luck with this.

To digress a bit, I note that the Epson Aculaser C1700 is a GDI printer, which depend heavily on the manufacturer for driver support for the reasons outlined here:

http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Generic/Generic-GDI_Printer

Quote:

"GDI" means "Graphical Device Interface" and is a software API created by Microsoft through which applications communicate with the drivers of graphical output devices, as printers or graphics cards. "GDI" is not a hardware protocol, the hardware protocols of GDI printers can be completely different, even between models of the same manufacturer. For Windows users this is no problem, as every printer comes with a driver CD containing a driver exactly for the particular printer.

Yes, browser local host 631.

I shall try to talk to the Epson people tomorrow; a friend has suggested something "more generic" but apart from the gist of it I didn't understand the words - something else to follow-up.

Summer is supposed to be on a Thursday this year but they're not sure which one...

If an Epson driver is not available in CUPS by default, it can be downloaded from Avasys: http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/

However the C1700 does not appear to be listed: http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/laser/DL1.do
Nor do its network and WiFi cousins, the C1750N and C1750W

Sometimes a generic driver is the answer, sometimes there is a near-enough substitute, sometimes the product seems to appear a while before the Linux driver does. I'd suggest you contact Epson's tech support people - chat: http://www.epson.co.uk/Contact-Us or email: http://www.epson.co.uk/sendMessage?contact=technical
They have always been helpful when I have done so.

                                      Hello all,

I've just bought an Epson Aculaser C1700 USB colour laser printer.

I've got CUPS 1.4 on Ubuntu and Firefox but I can't find the C1700 and I can't make it find the printer in Admin - it needs me to select some initials, Samba etc but I've tried them all and if I get anything at all I can't see what to do with the information i there is any.

I had thought that Epson were very good in their Linux support - might it be that I didn't do enough research?

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful - there was me thinking it should all be so easy, I had thought that was what CUPS was all about!

Regards, Ant
