I played with byobu last night and suddenly realised that it was holding my mother board's name on the bottom panel.

Thinking about the install I suddenly realised Ubuntu had forced me to name the computer with that odd number on it. I had assumed it was just a random code number made up on the spot.
ishw found the spot others just can't reach.
My motherboard and the graphics card are no longer someone else's secret.
Thanks to all.
They look identical.
I used hwinfo and got a stupid amount of info mainly about partition on my drives and my drives and USB connections.
But I get:

# dmidecode 2.9
SMBIOS 2.4 present.

Handle 0x0002, DMI type 2, 8 bytes
Base Board Information
Manufacturer: ASUSTek Computer INC.
Product Name: NARRA
Version: 1.01
Serial Number: MS1C73S32400696

Actually the motherboard is an Asus M2N68-LA, NARRA is just what HP call it. I wonder if the output depends a lot on whether the machine is home-built, or from a big manufacturer. I had a look at the same thing on my Toshiba laptop last night, and that was pretty uninformative about the motherboard's proper name as well.

Personally, I find hardware issues in windows harder to deal with - especially if the owner has inadvertently installed the wrong driver, the machine can report incorrectly...

Anyhoo, Windows/Linux arguments are fairly dull..

I'm kind of out of ideas with regards to polling the mainboard... Beyond the previously mentioned checking the physical board...

Sorry to dissapoint

Answering questions with a single line command that can be cut and pasted into a terminal is easier than writing half a page of "click this, select that" descriptions.
Actually, you often see that on windows forums as well, as most programs and config tools can be launched from the command line.
In fact there are some tools in windows that only work properly from the CLI.
