I have told the computing guys about ixsystems. Now it is up to them. They usually prefer UK / European suppliers though.

It is actually to be able to store large amounts of data. When I said "server" what I really meant is a server class machine (8 xeon cores 32 Gb RAM), it doesn't actually serve anything. It is just crunching huge data sets all the time. The machine itself has already got all the disks it can take. Also, with NAS I can transfer the data to another machine simply by pulling the ethernet cable out of the current machine and putting it into the new one.

That would have been an option if I were doing this for myself. At work this is not an option, sadly. I didn't know about FreeNAS so thanks for telling me. Had a brief look at the website and it looks very mature and capable.

At work, I am looking to buy a NAS device with about 8TB capacity and a fast connection to a single server machine. Has to be linux based, of course.
Will be grateful for any suggestions.
