What do I use for playing music on Linux?

Well, right now I have a Quad 33 preamp sitting on my Linux box. The 303 power amp is sitting on the floor alongside, and the record deck on a table next to that.

I use VLAN for my music (and just about every other bit of media).

RhythmBox on xubuntu, pulling my MP3's from a Seagate Blackarmor NAS box...

Replaced my Sansa e280 with a Fuze+ 16gb could`nt get it to play the tracks I wanted (no folder navigation) so now I`m using my Pandora via Rockbox.

I tried most of the Linux players but none were compatible with the Ipod Nano 4G so in the end I used Virtual box with XP running inside and Itunes which works a treat and also runs as if in a window of Linux.

You can't beat Itunes of the Ipod and that pains me to say.

If you are doing what I think, and downloading a bunch of software from the internet in anticipation of you new Linux PC... STOP... that is a Windows habit you will need to break.

Most software you require for Linux, will either be preinstalled, or can be installed from within the "Package Manager" that will come as part of your system.

Think of it like a "one stop shop" (although free) for all your software needs... all the software will come from one place (repository) that has been checked for malicious content, and compatibility with your OS.

You just pick what you want from 1000's of software packages available, and the package manager will download and install the software for you... and keep it up to date automatically.

This system really IS one of the major benefits of Linux, and will ensure your system stays healthy and malicious code free.

As for Media players, as previously stated by nelz, Your system will come with one preinstalled... I've found VLC to be a good "all round" replacement for Windows Media Player, though as a Music player I prefer Clementine.

Most Linux installations include a media player, so you may as well start with whatever is on the computer when you get it back. It is likely to be one of Amarok, Banshee or RhythmBox. That was you don't need to install anything.

Personally I use Amarok, but that is personal preference.

Rather than downloading it from the link on their homepage, I would see if its available from your version of Linux's "repository"

Unlike Windows, most of the software you are likely to use doesn't need to be bought, downloaded or installed by running an installer. Linux uses a system that is a little like the iPhone App store or Android market (except you never have to pay anything ).

It depends on which "distro" you are using (Red Hat, Ubuntu, Suse, etc), but most have a software management application that lets you search for and install the software you want.

In Ubuntu, click "Applications", then choose "Software Center". You should then be able to browse the available software by category.
