Sort of a related question:

I am trying to find the best resolution when I stream from my laptop to my Hi Def flat screen TV.

I have been using the VGA cable but am not happy with the results.

My laptop is an older model with no HDMI output.

Can anyone suggest an add-on solution? ( I surely do not want to do anything at the board level since those are so delicate.)

sorry I should have said this is to input another device that is hd thru the moniter and your correct its 1280x1024

If your graphics card is outputting through the VGA connection you on't achieve anything by trying to use HDMI. The VGA output to your monitor, which I'm sure is actually 1280 x 1024 if it is the standard LCD 4:3 format, outputs sufficient quality for the monitor.

Oki I was doing some research on my pc monitor and it has 1028x1024 but its a vga connection even thou in the website it says its a dvi.
any way I was wondering if I bought a hdmi to dvi and got a dvi to vga adapter would it work or am I just a silly t*t

I did see this and if Im reading this rite it will work
