I think the OP is worried that someone will sniff his username and password, then log in pretending to be him. Oh the mischief one could get up to impersonating someone else! If one could be bothered.

If there is nothing more than a username and password, there is no need for an SSL cert.

Here at MI5... er I mean as Rhakios, not someone impersonationg him, honestly, we... er I think it's totally unnecessary. It's not as though we.. er anyone is going to bother to intercept such trivial information.
