Just an update.
I installed me machine this morn and set up the new Samsung Configurator (?). After a very long time it finally printed the finest CUPS test page I have ever seen, in PS3. Very fast, too!

Mind you, it helps if you plug in the USB lead the right way round.....

For the sake of completeness I will post termorrer the items bash had to download to make autorun work, so others coming after will see what needs to be done.

There is a long list printers covered by the new soft, and I can only surmise that Splix will wither on the vine, as there have been no updates from the new config thingy.

All in all, very impressive, thanx again you guys!

Best

Nelz, you have done it again!
I got to /downloads and then to

Code:

sh cdroot/autorun

which it declined.(cannot open autorun).
On the second attempt with

Code:

sudo cd cdroot/autorun

It all fell into place.
It first complained of missing soft and tried to install and failed because of not being su. When I went to sudo again it installed such as Sane and a whole load of libs, and it presented me with the wonderful dialog box for the Unified Linux Driver, and gave me the list of printers, including my new ML-1670 Series which I selected, and it installed for me.

I am very tired now, but I will install my new printer termorrer.

From the bottom of my heart I cannot thank you all for giving me so much of your time and advice. I will also have a go at sorting out my /Home dir since this might be the underlying problem which prevented me from doing a system upgrade instead of a clean install a while back.

Best regards to all
There is no leading / before cdroot. Or you could cd into the cdroot directory and do

Code:

sh ./autorun

Before doing that...

I was following your lead on the directory, you have the double home in an earlier post.

Code:

cd /home/david/Downloads/cdroot/Linux/

You may need to use sudo for this bit

Code:

./install.sh

Ram, thank you so much for your guidance.
The system only finds as under:

Code:

cd /home/david/Downloads/

Then

Code:

sh /cdroot/autorun

Gives the response

Code:

canīt open cdroot/autorun

Changing to sudo has the same response.
I canīt help but wonder if the autorun will invoke a response from /media.
I have the new printer in a sealed box, presumably with the cd inside.
I thought I would check first if it would be supported and, if not, I would look for a deal from my local store based on a sealed box, their receipt and an order for something that would be sure to work. It might be time to bite the bullet and try the cd and run the risk of not being able to trade it in.
It does look as thoī me /Home/home setup is a bit odd?
Best regards
Have you grab the right file.

in cdroot you should see a folder called Linux and a file called autorun.

from a terminal cd in where you have unpacked the file then run the command nelz said.

Edit, looks like you have.

from a terminal

Code:

cd /Home/home/david/Downloads/

then run

Code:

I have a cunning plan....

Wot if.... the install script were to represent the instructions to /media?

In that case what we have here is a standard plug & pray cd but with a menu to include M$, Apple and various types of Linux, via the pull-down menu?

Could it be that Samsung have no idea of the value to the Linux community of the cd?

I have a sealed box wiv the beast inside and did not intend to open it until I was reasonably sure that it would work, although Splix does not support it.

I think now would be time to test the cd and report back.

I would be much encouraged to hear your comments.

Best regards
Which does not run. It is shown as being an exe, and even trying under Gnome-Commander as root, no joy.
apt-get works with .deb files from repositories, not random tarballs downloaded from www.god.knows.where. If you unpack the tarball you'll find Installer.htm which gives some information, and an installer.
Instead of second-guessing apt, I could just unpack the .tar.gz file in the /downloads directory and point apt-get-install at it and let it decide where to place it.
Then I should be able to install me new jobbie and see if it works...
Thanx Ram for your prompt reply.

The details are essentially correct. They differ only in (I hope) minor details.

I have a funny feeling that Samsung has bought so many firms that they have made a special repository for the new (re-badged) hardware, for which they have created SPL code, separate to Splix.

It may be that this printer is a Photomax PM-1200PS rebadged.

I do not know - or care - (as long as it works!).

Many thanx

I assume you got the driver from

http://www.samsung.com/sg/support/model/ML-1670/XSS-downloads?isManualDownload=true

Which got you this file UnifiedLinuxDriver_0.92.tar.gz
