I donut. I need a realtime kernel for instant sound response for my work. I use the desquetop also, prefer to have one system for everything.

Are those facebook online games running in flash?

If so each one will be sapping the resources of the computer and certainly could lead to the application crash.

Just a thought.

I never use facebook so have no idea about their games.

ok application crash. It's still a crash. I guess a Linux crash is when the kernel crashes because the kernel is Linux, not the OS.

I think the problem I have here, might be that the real time kernel I use is grabbing all available memory which is causing the hangs. I use facebook for online gaming mostly (Mafia Wars) and I have 5353 friends on facebook. I regularly open ten or more tabs, accepting gifts etc and eventually it just hangs, and ctrl alt f2 doesn't even work. So thatis a Linux crash right?

ps does FireFox multi-thread yet? Even IE9 (hisses) multi-threads...

If the kernel (Linux) had crashed you would not be able to do that.

As for multi threading I don't know or care... on the whole FF just works for me 30 tabs open minimum mainly text with the odd video tutorial left for reference.

will also do it, but I suspect a better option is

killall facebook

I routinely run chromium with 20+ tabs open and no crashes, but I generally don't have that many tabs slurping every detail of my private life

Make sure you have the GNOME 2.32 System Monitor running; or similar.
alt tab until cycle to System Monitor app

mostly used for when opening multiple tabs in Chromium.

sort the proceses into ID number
if you want to quit all google chromium browsers open,
right click and kill the chromium process with the lowest id number

or to kill the most recent tab kill the chromium process with the highest number

very handy if you're a beginner, for when the linux never crashes. 10 facebook game pages usually will do it launched concurrently.
