I'm using 12.04 just upgraded from 11.10 which had Iplayer desktop installed. Now that I've upgraded with a clean install I cant download iplayer desktop.

What I did do was install Adobe air by downloading it from adobe archives. looked up its properties and made it executable in properties/permissions

then did

Code:

sudo su

put in my pass to get root access, and to save time rather than change directories I just opened downloads and dragged and dropped the Adobe air bin file onto terminal hit enter and went to install, I had a bit of a problem here with 12.04 but discovered I needed a keyring in order to allow Air to install so in goes.

Code:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgnome-keyring.so.0 /usr/lib/libgnome-keyring.so.0

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgnome-keyring.so.0.2.0 /usr/lib/libgnome-keyring.so.0.2.0

then another quick drag and drop of the air bin file and it installed.

That was the easy bit, I should point out drag and drop of files onto Terminal are an often overlooked option..

Anyway I then went to install my favourite Radio player and BBC iplayer desktop. Iplayer desktop just hangs on the web page nothing appears except the little timer and then it just halts and the radio player although I downloaded as a deb. Air will not install it it said the package was not of a good enough quality???

I have another laptop that has 11.10 on it and iplayer installed already, I went to the install page for iplayer desktop to test it out and got the same problem the install window does not show and the application just hangs.

so as a stop gap measure I copied the application files from the laptop and transferred them to a folder on my main computer made a couple of short-cuts on the desktop for them and launched, since Air only provides the environment for them to operate, they worked without installing. However, iplayer desktop works for live TV and Radio but can't download.

Is there a solution to the iplayer desktop install problem?

That has nothing to do with get-iplayer

https://github.com/jjl/get_iplayer/wiki/Documentation explains how to use the various get-iplayer commands to download things from the BBC.

I know it might seem hard but sometimes there is no alternative to reading through the documentation, if it exists
get-iplayer --get [program number] typed into the terminal downloads that program to your home directory, for instance topgear showed up as Top_Gear_Series_18_-_Episode_3_b01c7x0r_default.flv which i double clicked on and movie player played it

One of the most useful features is the "pvr", you can do something like:

Code:

get_iplayer --pvradd "Corrie" "Coronation Street"

which will create a pvr search, then you can download all your pvr programs with

Code:

get_iplayer --pvr

It's clever enough to remember which shows it's already downloaded and won't download them again, so once you've set up all your pvr searches you can just cron the download to run every day.

It is actually quite easy.
get-iplayer gives you a list of available files with a number before each.

get-iplayer --get 204

will get program 204

get-iplayer --get 204 205 206

will get program 204, 205 and 206

and so on. simples.

It is really quick too

I think you have to get used to using the command line

Code:

sudo apt-get install get-iplayer

will install get-iplayer then run

Code:

get-iplayer

will update current streams available.NB adjust your terminal screen for the whole thing make sense.
Piping it through 'less' allows you to scroll back and forth

Code:

get-iplayer |less

I simply use chromium which plays everything - radio and TV - other than HD because I don't have 30Meg broadband.

Because we only have 1.5 to 2.0 mHz broadband download and we keep getting pauses (buffering) we need to download and save so that we can watch later, without all the waiting which can be 20 to 30 seconds and some time we get a message bandwidth to low.....

I have not use chromium....How does it work and where do we get it from.

Also we get poor lip-sync on iPlayer streaming of about 1 sec delay of the sound after the lips move....

I am using Dell dimension 2400 & Ubuntu11.10 OS

Thank for the info though...
The OP mentioned downloading the programmes, a browser only lets you stream them. I second the get_iplayer suggestion.

I'm not sure why you need to install iPlayer. I simply use chromium which plays everything - radio and TV - other than HD because I don't have 30Meg broadband.
