Hang on in there!

I had to reinstall XP yesterday and only went to activate it today. It wouldn't work - not even a failure message (volume license) - under IE or the Firefox extension.

After a spot of searching, it turns out there have been problems with WGA in the past week.

One solution I found involved setting the clock back to 6 July. I did this, installed more (optional) updates and the WGA icon is the tray disappeared, along with the activation reminder. So that, er, "fix", seems to work.

I installed "Windows Genuine Advantage" on someone else's PC it has only ever had XP Professional from day one and regularly updated, until he got a Windows 7 machine 18 months ago, it now won't boot as it is no longer a genuine microparp pile of ordure.... grrrrrrrrr!

The only option is to ring Microsoft and endure the questions and searches they make you do of the media to prove you have a legitimate CD/DVD. They'll then get you to type a one use only, 50 gazillion character string, into your PC which will make your PC "legal" again.

This is one of my biggest complaints with Microsoft, suddenly legitimate software becomes "pirated" and your computer stops working.

walk to kitchen
insert CD into microwave
activate said device on highest power setting
watch fireworks
when done, retrieve CD from microwave
open bin
dispose remains into bin
walk back to PC
install Linux
